FAQ

INCENSE BURNING 101

All your questions answered about burning incense.

HOW DO YOU BURN STICK INCENSE?

To burn stick incense, simply light the tip with a match or lighter and let flame for 5 seconds until you see a nice red ember. Gently blow out the flame and give the ember a little blow to keep it burning strong. Don’t blow it out too strongly as a spark may fly off.

As always, burn in well ventilated areas at a safe distance from anything flammable.

Do not burn unattended.

HOW LONG DOES A FLORE INCENSE STICK BURN FOR?

Floré incense sticks will burn for 45-60 minutes. The older your incense sticks get, the faster they will burn.

WHY WON'T MY INCENSE STICK STAY LIT?

Floré stick incense is made of a slim bamboo stick surrounded by ground bamboo called “punk”. When you light the stick, do not blow out the flame until you see the glow of the ember on the stick itself, otherwise it may not stay lit.

Sometimes, sticks just do not cooperate. If you have found yourself with a bunch of dud sticks, please contact us if you purchased it from floreincense.com. If you picked it up and one of our fabulous retail partners, please return it to them and we will work with them to make it right.

HOW DO YOU BURN CONE INCENSE?

To burn cone incense, simply light the tip with a match or lighter and let flame for 5 to 10 seconds until you see a nice red ember. Gently blow out the flame and give the ember a little blow to keep it burning strong.

When burning cone incense, it is important to always place them on a safe cone burner - usually made of stone or brass. Any surface you place an incense cone on should not be painted as the heat produced by the cone will damage the design. As always, burn in well ventilated areas at a safe distance from anything flammable.

Do not burn unattended.

HOW LONG DOES A FLORE INCENSE CONE BURN FOR?

Floré incense cones will burn for roughly 20 minutes. The older and dryer your incense cones get, the faster they will burn.

WHY WON'T MY INCENSE CONE STAY LIT?

Floré cone incense is made of pressed bamboo punk. When lighting a cone, make sure the tip has the ember glow before blowing out the flame. Some cone burners do not allow for sufficient air flow and that may be causing the cone to go out.

Sometimes, cones just do not cooperate. If you have found yourself with a bunch of dud cones, please contact us if you purchased it from floreincense.com. If you picked it up and one of our fabulous retail partners, please return it to them and we will work with them to make it right.

PURCHASING FLORÉ INCENSE

Whether from us our one of our fabulous wholesale partners, here's your questioned answered.

WHERE CAN I BUY FLORE INCENSE?

Floré has a number of retailers across this Canada - coast to coast! Please see our map tool to find a store near you.

DO YOU HAVE A STOREFRONT WHERE WE CAN COME BUY FROM YOU DIRECTLY?

Unfortunately, no. You may have seen our location on Danforth Ave in Toronto, but this is a manufacturing and administrative facility. We are not set up as a store front and have no money or payment processing power at our physical location. Due to the nature of our work, we are often elbows deep in making and packaging the incense itself and cannot facilitate being pulled away.

I OWN A STORE AND WOULD LOVE TO CARRY FLORE INCENSE - DO YOU WHOLESALE?

Absolutely! Floré has largely been a wholesale business over it's 40+ years. If you would like to learn more about becoming a retail partner, please visit the wholesale tab on our page or go here to sign-up!

DO YOU MAKE CUSTOM FRAGRANCES AND/OR SELL YOUR INCENSE UNDER PRIVATE LABEL?

We are not doing custom fragrances at this time, as we are only 2 people and it requires a lot of time and resources we do not have to spare. We also do not sell our incense under private label.

DO YOU SHIP INTERNATIONALLY?

As a small independent we are not set up for online sales internationally. We have, however, been able to faciliate orders from around the world, so reach out and we will see how we can make it work.

HOW DO I MAKE A RETURN?

If you purchased our incense from one of our retail partners, please make the return directly with them and we will sort out what needs to be done. If you purchased directly from us online, we do not allow for returns.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Whether from us our one of our fabulous wholesale partners, here's your questioned answered.

IS INCENSE SMOKE UNHEALTHY TO BREATHE?

Incense smoke should never be inhaled directly and always burned in a well ventilated space. Anything that burns releases some form of particulate into the air. As modern humans, we are exposed to a great deal of air particulate, both manmade and natural. Ultimately your health is in your hands. If you suffer from any conditions or ailments that impact your lungs you should seek the professional opinion of your healthcare provider.

CAN YOU BE ALLERGIC TO INCENSE?

It’s absolutely possible, but not necessarily a given. It’s important to be mindful about using our products if you have allergies to trees, pollens, and/or grasses, as several of the natural oils we use - cedar and patchouli specifically - are common allergens.

Both owners of Floré have allergies and do experience reactions to our skin and sinuses when we work with certain oils. Given that these are not severe allergies, we have decided to continue working with them. We are also ‘80’s farm kids and grew up with a healthy dose of - ‘here’s some kleenex and benadryl, now go do your chores’.

IS IT SAFE TO BURN INCENSE AROUND MY PETS?

Your pets are living things with individual personalities, allergies and preferences. Though there is nothing inherently unsafe for your pets, it’s important to pay attention to their reactions and let them tell you if they like it or not. Pets can have allergies and sensitivities and they will let you know.

Both owners have feline friends who we burn incense around daily.

IS IT SAFE TO BURN INCENSE AROUND MY BABY AND/OR CHILDREN?

Incense should always be burned in a well ventilated space, and the smoke should never be enough to overwhelm.

Children are people. Just as people have sensitivities, so do babies and children. It is important to monitor them and ask them if they don't like it and let them consent. If you have concerns about this, talk to your health care provider.

INGREDIENTS & FRAGRANCES

Whether from us our one of our fabulous wholesale partners, here's your questioned answered.

WHAT ARE YOUR INCENSE STICKS AND CONES MADE FROM?

Floré incense is made from natural bamboo. The core of the stick is bamboo and the punk (which is the part with the fragrance on it) is ground down bamboo that is then pressed to hold to the stick. As the punk is ground down, it makes a natural gum in order to adhere to the stick.

DOES INCENSE GO BAD?

Floré incense won’t go bad over time, though the fragrance may change and become milder. Especially in any blend, one of the fragrance notes may become more dominant as the ingredients age differently. The older an incense cone or incense stick gets, the more dried out it will become and will burn faster.

For best quality incense, it is best to burn within 6 to 12 months.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR INCENSE AND WHY DON'T YOU LIST THEM?

Floré incense is made from fragrance oils supplied by Aromatics + Flavors Inc. in Scarborough, ON and the fragrances recipes are their proprietary information.

AFI complies with the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and all oils are formulated to be safe to burn as incense.

For more information on the IFRA visit their website here.

IS YOUR INCENSE MADE OF 100% NATURAL INGREDIENTS? IS IT ORGANIC?

Our incense is not 100% natural. Each fragrance contains a mixture of natural and synthetic ingredients, all designed to burn safely as incense.

We do not believe all synthetic compounds are bad or unhealthy, just as all natural compounds are not inherently harmless. The synthetic compounds are a necessity in order to blend and bind the oils, control burn rate, and are also present in most cosmetics and perfumes on the market today.

IS YOUR INCENSE VEGAN AND CRUELTY-FREE?

Yes! Our incense is vegan, cruelty-free and phthalate-free. Our fragrance oil partner, Aromatics + Flavors Inc., is an animal-friendly facility and tests no product, raw material or process on any of our animal friends.

The only animals our incense is ‘tested’ on are our household pets when we burn our products at home, which we do daily.

WHAT HAPPENED TO NATIVE SMUDGE?

Native Smudge was renamed to Guidance and is still available for sale. The change was in name only, and we have maintained the original recipe for the fragrance.

For more details, you can read our blog post on the decision to rename our popular and beloved blend here.
