Frequently Asked Questions

HOW TO BUY OUR INCENSE

Whether directly from us or from one of our fabulous wholesale partners, here are your options when it comes to finding and buying our premium handmade incense sticks:

Where can I buy Floré Canadian Incense?

You can buy incense online directly from us at floreincense.com. You can also find Floré Canadian Incense in gift shops, health food stores, new age and crystal stores, bookstores, yoga studios, cannabis stores and other retail locations across Canada.

Visit our store locator to find a retail location near you.

What types of incense do you sell?

We sell 10” bamboo incense sticks that are hand dipped in fragrance oils.

Unfortunately we no longer carry incense cones or backflow incense cones, see question "why don't you sell cones anymore?" for details.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Payments are made online by the purchaser via credit card.

Credit cards accepted are Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Our website will also accept Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay.

All credit card transactions are securely facilitated by Shopify. We do not store or have access to customer credit card data. We do not accept credit card payments over the phone.

If you are in Canada and would like to purchase Floré Canadian Incense but do not have a credit card, please contact us to arrange an email money transfer.

Wholesale payment terms and forms accepted are negotiated on a customer by customer basis, you can learn more by creating a free wholesale account.

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes, we offer free shipping on Canadian retail orders over $89. Use the code FREESHIP at checkout.

See Shipping & Returns/Exchanges for more details on our policy.

Wholesale shipping is negotiated separately, please contact us for details.

Do you have a storefront where I can smell and buy your incense in person?

You may have noticed our street level workshop on Danforth Avenue in Toronto, but we are not open to the public. We are an online incense retailer, you can only buy our incense directly from us at floreincense.com.

We are not set up as a store front and have no money or payment processing power at our physical location. Due to the nature of our work, we are often elbows deep in making and packaging the incense itself and cannot facilitate being pulled away.

You would not be able to smell a thing in our workshop other than the all encompassing scent of every fragrance we work with. We have to take fragrances home to properly test and experience them.

I own a store and would love to carry Floré Canadian Incense, do you wholesale?

Absolutely! Floré Canadian Incense was founded as a wholesale incense supplier over 40 years ago. Learn more about our wholesale history, products and process.

You can sign up for a wholesale account for free and contact us with any questions you may have.

Do you offer incense sample packs?

No, we do not currently offer incense sample packs. The challenges reside in the packaging requirements.

Due to the oily and fragrant nature of incense, if we were to include different fragrances in one package without effective barriers between them, the individual sticks will start absorbing all the scents.

Multiple samples within the same package would require a lot of extra packaging, something we have actively moved away from.

Do you offer subscription or loyalty programs?

We do not currently offer subscription or loyalty programs, but it is something we may be able to provide in the future.

Can I send Floré incense as a gift?

We do not offer gift wrapping or messaging services, but you can ship a package to a different address from your billing address.

Each order contains a packing slip listing the items, billing name and address, shipping name and address, but no prices are listed.

Do you offer bulk incense buying options for events and businesses?

Contact us directly with your request and we can assess feasibility. We can sell unpackaged incense sticks in bulk, but our ability to do so is dependent on a number of factors. Minimum purchase in kilograms would be required. Costs can only be determined at the time of the request due to fluctuating fragrance prices.

If you are looking for a large amount of packaged incense sticks, you can open a wholesale account. The minimum purchase requirement is 4 dozen / 48 packages.

Learn more about our wholesale parameters.

Wholesale orders that exceed 40 dozen may be subject to longer lead times.

Do you make custom incense fragrances on request or sell under a private label?

We do not create custom incense fragrances for any outside parties.

It is a painstaking process of trial and error, and we are a very small company. It is unlikely that we could charge what it actually costs in time and labour and still make it affordable for the customer.

All of our incense fragrances are exclusive to Floré Canadian Incense, and we do not provide private label manufacturing using our materials.

Do you sell limited edition or seasonal scents?

We offer a variety of seasonal fragrances that are available for a limited time each year. Join our mailing list to be the first to know when they are available.

Why do you sell your incense at a higher price than other stores do?

Product manufacturers, especially ones that make only one type of product, like Floré Canadian Incense, rely on sales of that one product to cover all expenses, including wages. The margin needs to be set within a range that will allow the business to continue to operate effectively.

Retail locations that sell a multitude of different products have more flexibility to decide on where to set profit margins. They can spread the overall business profit margin across a multitude of products, setting some margins higher and some lower, depending on how they wish to incentivise purchase. More affordable consumables like incense can be priced at a lower margin to encourage the customer to add to their cart and ultimately spend more per transaction.

The advantage of buying directly from the manufacturer includes access to the full product line up, a lower carbon footprint, supporting a small business directly, and customer only promotions.

We are happy that you are purchasing our incense regardless of where you are purchasing it from. Supporting the businesses we wholesale our incense to ultimately supports us too!

What happened to Native Smudge?

Native Smudge was renamed to Guidance and is still available for sale. The change was in name only, and we have maintained the original recipe for the fragrance.

For more details, you can read our blog post on the decision to rename our popular and beloved blend.

Why don't you sell incense cones anymore?

The simple truth is that the sales were too low and too slow to continue investing in the time, materials and space required for incense cones or backflow incense cones.

Incense cone quality was also becoming a concern as fragrance can degrade over time and the cones were sitting in inventory for too long. Making smaller batches proved impractical, so we made the decision to discontinue the product.

Do you ship outside of Canada?

As a small independent manufacturer, we are not set up for online sales internationally.

We have, however, been able to facilitate orders from around the world. Send us an email and we will see how we can make it work.

How do I make a return?

If there is a problem with your order or the incense itself, please contact us, but we do not accept returns. See Shipping & Returns/Exchanges for further details.

Fragrance is deeply personal and it can be a journey to find a scent that suits your preferences. We strongly suggest you peruse the fragrance descriptions for each of our products to help you decide before buying incense online.

We also offer curated incense collections to take you on the themed sensory journey

HOW TO USE INCENSE

We have a plethora of incense related information in our blog Burning Thoughts, where you can learn all about types of incense, the history of incense, and its many uses. Here are some of the most common questions about how to use incense answered:

How do you burn incense?

Any and all types of incense should be burned in a well ventilated space and never left to burn unattended.

To burn an incense stick, simply light the tip with a match or lighter and let it flame for a few seconds until you see a red ember. Gently blow out the flame and allow the red ember to smolder and release fragrant smoke. Use an incense burner or ashcatcher to hold the stick while it burns. Place the incense in a well ventilated room away from anything flammable.

When burning an incense cone it is important to use a heat resistant incense cone burner, usually made of stone, brass or ceramic. Incense cones burn very hot and the ember will come into direct contact with whatever vessel it is in. If the cone burner is painted, the heat could damage the design. Place the incense cone burner on a heat resistant surface and remember the burner can also get very hot so be careful.

Backflow incense cones are lit in the same way as a regular incense cone, but require a special backflow incense cone burner and a lot more maintenance in order to achieve an enjoyable fragrance experience. We sincerely recommend that if you enjoy incense for the fragrance more than the smoke visual, do not burn backflow incense cones. All the same precautions apply in terms of ventilation, attention and heat resistant surfaces.

How long does an incense stick burn?

Incense burn time depends on the size and type of incense. On average, our 10” incense sticks will burn for 45 - 60 minutes, while an incense cone will burn for around 20 - 40 minutes.

Airflow, humidity, age, and how the incense is positioned can affect how quickly it burns. If you are looking for a slower or faster burn time, experimenting with different shapes or forms is an option.

Why does my incense keep going out?

If your incense stick will not stay lit, it is most likely that the flame was blown out before an ember could form.

Try igniting the incense again, and leave the flame until you see the glowing red ember, then gently blow it out. If the incense appears damp, that could also be the problem. Leave it out of the package and let it dry out for a day or so before trying to ignite it again.

When it comes to an incense cone that keeps going out, and you have it in an incense cone burner with a lid that has some airflow holes, take the lid off completely. Sometimes the holes just do not allow for enough airflow.

And sometimes incense just does not cooperate. If you have found yourself with a bunch of duds, please contact us if you purchased it from floreincense.com. If you picked it up and one of our fabulous retail partners, please return it to them and we will work with them to make it right.

What should I burn incense for?

Burning incense is an ancient practice, often associated with ceremony and religious rites. We encourage you to burn incense for whatever purpose you would like.

Incense burning can compliment your yoga practice, wellness routine, or mark the observance of special dates or occasions.

Scent is closely tied to memory and can influence concentration, so you can burn incense to set a mood or help you study.

Incense can also be a very practical way to help mask and dispel odours. Whatever you do, you can burn incense too!

How should I safely extinguish incense before it finishes burning?

It is easy to snuff out an incense stick or incense cone before it is done burning.

To snuff out an incense stick, the best way is to stick the burning tip in some dirt or sand. As long as the dirt is not too damp, the stick should be ready to be re-lit when you are ready. You can also run the tip under water or stick it in a bit of water. You may need to let it dry out before re-lighting.

All you have to do with an incense cone is put a glass or mug over it and wait a minute. Just remember the smoke will leave some residue in the cup that you definitely want to wash out before using.

How should I store incense to maintain its quality?

Incense should be stored in a cool or room temperature place, away from direct sunlight and dampness.

Sunlight and heat will break down the fragrance components, and dampness may prevent the incense from lighting or burning properly.

INCENSE HEALTH & SAFETY

If you suffer from any conditions or ailments that impact your lungs you may wish to seek the professional opinion of your healthcare provider before burning incense.

Does incense expire?

Incense does not technically expire, but over time fragrance compounds break down and the scent will be changed and diminished.

For best results, use incense within 12 months of purchase, and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Is incense smoke unhealthy to breathe?

Incense smoke should never be inhaled directly. Always burn incense in a well ventilated space.

Anything that burns releases some form of particulate into the air. As modern humans, we are exposed to a great deal of air particulate, both manmade and natural.

Ultimately your health is in your hands. Consult your healthcare provider if you are uncertain about burning incense and your health.

Can incense cause an allergic reaction?

Yes, incense can trigger an allergic response in some individuals.

Be mindful about using our products if you have allergies to trees, pollens, and/or grasses, as several of the natural oils we use - cedar and patchouli specifically - are common allergens.

Both owners of Floré have allergies and do experience reactions to our skin and sinuses when we work with certain oils. Given that these are not severe allergies, we have decided to continue working with them.

Is it safe to burn incense around my pets?

Our pets are living things with individual personalities, allergies and preferences. Though there is nothing inherently unsafe for your pets, it's important to pay attention to their reactions and let them tell you if they like it or not.

Pets can have allergies and sensitivities and they will let you know. Both owners have feline friends who we burn incense around daily.

Is it safe to burn incense around my baby or children?

Incense should always be burned in a well ventilated space, and the smoke should never be enough to overwhelm.

Children are people. Just as people have sensitivities, so do babies and children. If your children have allergies to trees, grasses, and pollen, they may have an allergic reaction to incense.

Children should never be left alone around burning incense. It is important to monitor them and ask them if they don't like it and let them consent. If you have concerns about this, talk to your health care provider.

What is your incense made from?

Our incense sticks are made from slim bamboo sticks with ground bamboo known as “punk” pressed tightly around the stick.

The ground punk has a natural gumminess that allows it to be compressed and stick together. Incense cones are ground bamboo punk pressed into a cone shaped mold.

The incense sticks are soaked in fragrance oils, allowed to dry, then packaged in our Toronto, Ontario workshop.

Is your incense 100% natural? Is it organic?

No, our incense is not 100% natural or organic. Each fragrance contains a mixture of natural and synthetic ingredients, all designed to burn safely as incense.

We do not believe all synthetic compounds are bad or unhealthy, just as all natural compounds are not inherently harmless.

The synthetic compounds are a necessity in order to blend and bind the oils, control burn rate, and are also present in most cosmetics and perfumes on the market today

What are the ingredients in your incense and why don’t you list them?

All the fragrance oils used by Floré Canadian Incense are created by chemists specializing in fragrance at Aromatics + Flavors Inc. and are their proprietary recipes.

AFI complies with the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and all fragrance oils are formulated to burn safely as incense.

AFI discloses the ingredient list to us, their direct customer, as per the regulations that govern their industry. As our product is not ingested or applied topically, we are not required to list the ingredients provided by AFI.

If you have specific questions, contact us, and we can direct you to AFI if necessary.

INCENSE SUPPLY CHAIN & SUSTAINABILITY

Wherever we can, we strive to keep our supply chain as local as possible, reduce manufacturing waste, and use the most environmentally sustainable materials that work for our unique product.

Is your incense made in Canada?

Yes, Floré Canadian Incense has been made in Canada since 1982!

Our workshop on Danforth Avenue in Toronto's east end is where our incense has been handmade since 1987. We are closed to the public.

The original location was on Gerrard Street in Toronto from 1982 - 1987.

Where do you get your raw materials from? Are they cruelty-free?

Our unscented natural bamboo incense sticks are imported from Vietnam. There is no North American supplier of the type of incense stick we use that we currently know of.

All of our fragrance oils are supplied by Aromatics + Flavors Inc. from Scarborough Ontario. All fragrance oils are vegan, phthalate free, and not tested on animals.

We soak our sticks in the fragrance oils until it is all absorbed, and any damaged sticks are kept so they can be burned on bonfires. We have very little waste in our manufacturing process.

Where do you get your packaging from? Is it eco-friendly?

Our packaging is provided by Rootree in Burlington Ontario. It is currently recyclable in municipalities that can process materials in category 7. We know that not all municipalities recycle this category.

We did try using compostable packaging briefly, but unfortunately the current technology is not able withstand the oily nature of our product.
